- Séoul : La capitale compte de nombreux musées : Voici quelques musées les plus important du Pays.
- The National Museum of Contemporary Art's
The National Museum of Contemporary Art's mission is to contribute to the spreading of culture through its recognition, organization of exhibitions and conservation of contemporary Korean and international art. The Museum was inaugurated on October 20, 1969, on the grounds of Gyeongbokgung, in Seoul, Korea.
On July 5, 1973, the Museum was moved to Deoksugung, also in Seoul. The move was dictated by the public's growing awareness and desire for art and culture, which translated into the Museum's decision to establish larger exhibition spaces for special projects and its permanent collections.
In 1980, the Museum was again faced with the problem of the extension of its exhibition spaces. The royal palace of stone could no longer fulfill the expanding role of a national museum, which is not only to organize art shows and present its permanent collections, but also to educate a growing and ever-more demanding public on the pleasures of culture. The problem was resolved with the construction of a new museum in Gwacheon-si, on the outskirts of Seoul.
- National Museum of Korea
In 1986, the National Museum of Korea moved to Jungangcheong, the former Japanese colonial government building. Expanded and reorganized, the museum came to have 24 galleries and 13 storage rooms. Scientific and computerized management of the collection was gradually pursued. Education programs were also activated with establishment of new social education programs: Museum Class for Youth, Saturday Public Lectures, Cultural Education Course for Seniors, Cultural Education Course for Housewives, Training Course for School Teachers, Training Course for Tour Guides, Museum Tour for Mothers and Children, and the Traveling Museum. Archaeological investigation and special exhibitions were actively carried out. Historic sites such as Songguk-ri, Buyeo; Daho-ri, Changwon; Heungguksa (Temple), Seonamsa (Temple), and the Buncheong kiln site at Mt. Gyeryongsan were excavated. Special exhibitions and international exchange exhibitions were held annually, providing wonderful opportunities to enjoy the richness of the culture. Notable exhibitions include "The Beauty of Korea", "Goryeo Celadon", "The Mysterious Ancient Kingdom, Gaya", "The Bronze Culture of Korea", and "Buddhist Statues from the Three Kingdoms Period." In the meantime, the collection increased from the 50,000 pieces at the time of inauguration to over 240,000 pieces (including the holdings of local museums) through donations, acquisition, and excavation. Cheongju, Jeonju, Daegu, Gimhae, Jeju and Chuncheon National Museums newly opened; and Buyeo National Museum has been enlarged and reopened in a new site. A new museum building for Gongju National Museum is under construction for its reopening in 2003 making the total number of local branch museums eleven.
